Cornelia Maude Spelman is a writer, artist, and former social worker who has written about the importance of emotions in the lives of children and families. Her “The Way I Feel” series of picture books for young children is about recognizing and managing emotions and forming healthy, happy relationships. Her books also help children cope with difficult situations such as death and divorce, and help parents educate their children about sexual abuse. Her books have been called “sensitive,” “compassionate,” “gentle,” “reassuring,” and “understanding.”.
Cornelia's memoir, MISSING, will be published in December, 2010 by Northwestern University Press. Advance reviews call it "memoir writing at its absolute finest," "Beautiful and enlightening," and "Spell-binding." Read more about it by clicking on "Missing" in the Books column to the right. An excerpt appeared in Chicago magazine and can be read online at http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/November-2008/Love-Bill/
Cornelia’s art is about people, animals and positive relationships and activities. Publisher David Dean of Art Buyer magazine wrote that Cornelia’s “emotions translate into her art and while we all have our favorite artists for varying reasons, I like the combination of heart and art!”
Her photographs capture moments in time of our ordinary lives.
Through My Eyes is Cornelia’s commentary on parenting, children and families, popular culture, politics, mental health, violence prevention, child abuse and neglect, grief and loss, family legacies, resources for parents and teachers, and current events
